With Pret a Manger converting an existing shop into a vegetarian only branch last year, the beginning of April 2017 brought us the launch of the second Veggie Pret. The first launch of Veggie Pret saw customers in London sitting on the floor eating lunch, evidencing customers who were absolutely desperate to get their hands on Veggie options. Vegetarians and non-vegetarians can now enjoy meat free foods ready to grab from the shelves in Soho as well as Shoreditch. But what’s in store for the future of Vegetarians and Vegans?

Reducing meat and dairy in our diets is an ongoing trend, while more of us are choosing a plant based and vegetarian diet. It is these consumer trends that are swaying companies to produce more products for vegetarians and vegans and it is not surprising that it isn’t just Pret a Manger pushing for more of these options. Would you believe McDonald’s has joined the ranks of fast food chains offering vegan-friendly options? They have added a vegan burger to their Norwegian menu!

Whether going vegetarian or vegan is a moral, health or personal choice, it is great that 2016 and 2017 have brought the convenience of these dietary options. At Team Eco some of us avoid bread based lunches. We have noticed that traditional cafes and menus tend to have limited options, with most items consisting of meat and bread with little option for fresh food. After visiting various vegetarian only cafes and venues, we absolutely love the variation and options for fruit, vegetables and fresh foods. Perfect for a light healthy lunch, while enjoying a meat free meal through choice.

Finally the food industry is beginning to realise the demand for vegan and vegetarian food. We are keeping our fingers crossed that this trend continues to grow, giving us all more choice and flexibility over our diet when eating out.
