Add Safety into the Mix

I’m sure we could all agree safety is invaluable; everyone has the right to work and visit sites that are safe. And above all, no business owner would ever want to put their staff and customers at risk. So no matter how minuscule the risks may seem, the last thing you want is something to go wrong, and in a worst case scenario actually injure someone. One frequent question we get asked regarding safety is whether a safety guard is necessary for a commercial food mixer? The following incident really does answer this…

A bakery in Lancashire was recently fined after one of their employees was injured whilst using a commercial mixer. After The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigated the premises, it was found that the bakery did not install the adequate guard on their food mixer. This meant that employees were able to reach unsafe parts of the machine whilst it was in operation. We are sad to hear that the worker broke bones, whilst also having to have his ring finger amputated. Simply by installing a mixer guard, this could have been avoided completely. 

Whilst we understand that it can be costly to add a mixer guard, we cannot express how important it is meet the necessary measures. It may even be more beneficial to replace your mixer with a new unit entirely. All commercial mixers now come with a safety guard fitted as standard and safety cut off switches. These may seem like minor issues, but they make a huge difference for the safety of anyone operating the machine. So in answer to our frequently asked question above. YES! You absolutely do need the mixer guard. Make sure you put the right protection in your commercial kitchen to ensure a safe, happy and risk free environment.
